With a total population of 1,004, (and an estimated year-round population of just 201!), Baileys Harbor appears to be one of the smallest and quietest villages in Door County. However, its many attractions, restaurants, and events would challenge that notion! The first village to be founded in Door County, Baileys Harbor has one of the richest histories of any place on the peninsula, and it’s teeming with life not just on land, but beneath the water’s surface as well. Learn everything you need to know about Baileys Harbor and what makes it so special!

History of Baileys Harbor

Baileys Harbor

Baileys Harbor was discovered during a raging storm on Lake Michigan. In October of 1848, Captain Justice Bailey was desperately searching for a place to anchor his schooner to spare his crew and cargo. During the night, he came upon a quiet little cove where he quickly docked, and he took the storm as an opportunity to explore the surrounding area. After weathering the rain and wind, he brought samples of rock and wood back to his employer, Alanson Sweet of Milwaukee, who saw the area’s business potential. Next spring, in 1849, Sweet began development with a dock constructed to harvest the surrounding land’s wood and stone.

A known figure in Milwaukee politics, Sweet used his influence and status to officially establish Door County, and he made Baileys Harbor the county seat. In 1851, he erected the first lighthouse in the harbor, which was known as the Bird Cage Lighthouse.

While Sweet’s business ventures eventually petered out after he landed in some legal troubles, immigrant settlers were attracted to the area and began to make lives for themselves during the 1860s. Much like the other early settlements in Door County, farming, logging, quarrying, and fishing were the primary industries in Baileys Harbor. However, in the 1870s, tourism quickly climbed the ranks as the most lucrative business in the area, with resorts and hotels popping up to accommodate the many new visitors and travelers. As they say, the rest is history!

FUN FACT: Have you ever wondered why the village is called Baileys Harbor instead of Bailey’s Harbor, after Captain Justice Bailey? Despite what you may think, the community’s founders didn’t forget the apostrophe! Instead, the U.S. government opted to remove it. The Domestic Names Committee of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names doesn’t like apostrophes in the names of public places, as it appears to imply private ownership. In the Committee’s 126 years of existence, they have permitted only five public places to have apostrophes in their name!
